The shooter from Akron fired dozens of rounds, hitting two cars in the college neighborhood, according to police

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) — At least a dozen shots were fired last week in a neighborhood packed with University of Akron students.

Akron police are still searching for the man who pulled the trigger.

“My roommates and I were woken up by a gunshot and I went downstairs and looked out my window and saw two guys running!” said the frantic 911 caller.

Dozens of 911 calls were made that night, all from terrified students.

“There might be a dead person in the car right in front of our house!” shouted a student.

Akron police said last Thursday shortly after 10 p.m. that they had responded to the gunfire call.

The student who wanted to remain anonymous saw some of them go down.

The student said, “My comrades and I were sitting in this room, and we heard about 12-15 gunshots.” I saw a man walking in the front yard with what appeared to be a gun in his right hand. As soon as he saw we were done he ran to the other room to try and take cover for a bit. One of my buddies who was here was definitely petrified and went home right after. It was definitely a tougher situation for him, but I definitely thought a little bit about maybe a stray bullet here and there.”

The victim told police he was walking down this lane on Allen Street when he heard a gunshot.

He told officers that he turned and saw a man firing a gun in his direction.

The victim said the passenger in his car got out and ran.

He pulled out of the driveway and tried to drive, and that’s when he crashed into a silver Cadillac.

19 News spoke with the vehicle’s owner, a University of Akron senior who wished to remain anonymous.

“I still feel safe on campus,” said the student. “I know they’re doing the best they can, but it would be nice if these weren’t things we had to deal with, especially during finals week. It just adds a little bit of tension that I don’t think any of us need.”

That student was not home when the shooting occurred.

“I remember just walking down the street and seeing someone’s car and thinking, This is terrible, this is what someone is going to have to deal with during finals week, and then realizing it was mine.”

Witnesses told police they saw the gunman approach a field across the street before he began shooting at the Ford Explorer.

The Chevy Malibu was also shot. Several students saw two men running in the area.

One 911 caller told police, “They’re both wearing ski masks but they’re male and now it looks like they’re walking back down Allen Street toward campus.”
