Engine: Forecasts of bunker fuel availability in the Americas

North Amarica

VLSFO and LSMGO availability is normal for speed dates in the Houston area and off the US Gulf Coast. But HSFO delivery can be more difficult to secure in Houston. Sources say the first delivery dates with two Houston-based suppliers extend into the beginning of next month.

Some sources argue that the availability of VLSFO and LSMGO in Houston may also shrink over the coming days amid higher demand. Houston has served VLSFO and LSMGO at competitive levels to regional ports and some other global fuel transportation hubs over the past weeks.

Low fuel prices have contributed somewhat to the steady stream of fuel-related inquiries in Houston, says one trader.

Vault operations at Galveston Offshore Lightering (GOLA) have been down for periods since last week amid inclement weather. Some suppliers attempt to deliver the shanks when weather permits, but deliveries are usually put on hold when waves crest more than five metres.

Availability of VLSFO and LSMGO is a little tight for speed dates in New York. Sources say one supplier can supply both grades with 5 days lead time, while another supplier can provide an urgent order.

VLSFO’s immediate availability is tight in San Francisco. Sources said that a supplier withdrew its offers for the grade during maintenance work on onshore fuel oil tanks. However, the supplier can provide LSMGO for quick dates.

All grades stay tight for on-the-spot dates in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles on the US West Coast. A longer lead time of at least 10-15 days is generally recommended to ensure full coverage from all suppliers. A supplier can offer the earliest delivery of the VLSFO from December 7th onwards in Long Beach. Securing an HSFO can be challenging for both speed dates and later dates as the degree is offered by fewer suppliers.

Bunker availability remains constant for all fuel grades in Manzanillo, Mexico. Recommended lead times for HSFO, VLSFO and LSMGO are around five days, while express stems can be accommodated.

Sources say overall fuel demand in Manzanillo increased slightly this month.

Caribbean and Latin America

All scores are tight for quick dates in Balboa and Cristobal in Panama. Many suppliers at both outlets are reluctant to confirm delivery dates for HSFO, VLSFO and LSMGO due to tight availability and busy schedules, making delivery times unpredictable.

HSFO deliveries can be more difficult to secure in Balboa and Cristobal. A supplier that was supplying grade with a shorter lead time of five days last week has now revised its delivery schedule from December 15th onwards. Others require at least 10-12 days lead time.

Fuel demand at Colombian ports was slightly slower this week compared to last week. Demand is likely to increase over the coming weeks in Cartagena and Santa Marta in Colombia, says a trader. A supplier can provide VLSFO and LSMGO for quick dates in both outlets. Another requires at least three days of lead time.

Tight immediate LSMGO availability in Callao Peru. A supplier is running low on LSMGO stock. VLSFO is more readily available for quick dates in port.

All scores are tight for quick dates in the Zona Comun Marina in Argentina. One supplier is fully booked for the remaining days of the month and can supply VLSFO and LSMGO from December 2nd onwards.
