A hidden blessing amid Frost’s failure at Nebraska is the return of Mickey Joseph

It is the end of (another) error.

Nebraska’s Scott Frost coaching class officially closes Friday at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. How will it be remembered?

I wouldn’t view it as a complete disaster. Not a total bust.

There was a blessing that came out of the whole mess.

Nebraska was reintroduced to Mickey Joseph.

Joseph’s second term in Lincoln was unforgettable. It was a treasure. Hidden gem.

Joseph came to NU in 1988 as a national awardee, Gatorade Player of the Year. He ended up starting nine games at quarterback in his four-year career. A freak leg injury limited his senior year.

As I remember from the 1991 season, my freshman year at Nebraska, Joseph was a popular player with the crowd and the media. He was replaced by Keithen McCant in the opening game and rarely played.

I didn’t get to know MJ until last spring, when he arrived on the scene as the lead employee to rescue Scott Frost.

Joseph returned as a celebrity assistant, home-tenant after his success at LSU. ace recruiter. Youth guide. Hard Love Motivator. difference maker.

Since I had spent so much time around him in the spring, and seen him around the players, I could see why he was such a great recruit. There is a real quality to Joseph. It is related to everyone.

While Joseph is not a dynamic character, he has an understated confidence and aura. relax you. People want to be around him.

In this way it reminds me of Barry Switzer.

Joseph came here as a kind of savior for Frost, whether it was recruiting to transfer to NU or giving him a spirit of leadership. Fans had hoped he would lose his penchant for holding players accountable to the entire team.

We never heard from Mickey, because the assistants weren’t allowed to talk. Until he became the assistant interim technical director.

Then Joseph stepped in front of the microphone twice a week. And I think a lot of Husker fans fell in love with it.

They loved showing him off when he got off the bus first at Purdue in a black suit, black shirt, and red tie. They were partial to his no-excuses messages and taking responsibility each week.

And they saw him as an underdog, and everyone loves an underdog. Especially when he played for scarlet and cream.

But after losing the first game against Oklahoma, NU played hard and seemed more focused under Joseph. Play defense better. After four years of playing tag, they’ve stepped in for good.

He had wins over Indiana and Rutgers and got into a debate between those who wanted an established head coach and those on Mickey’s team.

Five straight losses took the air out of the campaign. So you have some options for managing the game, selecting quarterbacks, etc.

Joseph is not expected to get the job, but that doesn’t remove his impact on the team and program in 2022.

He was the right guy at the right time for NU.

This season would have gotten ugly, possibly ripped at the seams. you did not.

Joseph got the team’s attention. They played for their coach. This may be the way it is supposed to work. And Joseph probably gets the credit because he acted more like a head coach than Frost.

Joseph Factor, even with a small team, they were always competing and there were some games where you’d think, well, maybe…

On his way, Joseph not only embraced Nebraska football, but reminded some people what it was like about Huskers football.

You will never succeed As a job candidate, Joseph was the interim coach of a team with too many flaws to count. It is set up to fail on this schedule.

And I still maintain that Joseph would have had a better chance at the job had he not been the interim coach. Instead, he was a high-profile assistant coach with a reputation for recruiting talent and a national title ring.

You cannot order a new head coach to retain certain assistant coaches. Every coach has his buddies, the ones he trusts to do what he wants.

Especially when the assistant coach is already popular with the fans and players.

But I think keeping Joseph in the next crew would be the right thing to do, play smart.

He’s a smart guy who attracts recruits, including those who move on, then call. It’s a bridge to the locker room. And a bridge to the community, fans and high school coaches.

If he sounds like a head coach candidate, I’d say not yet. Joseph could use some spice and some lessons on how to run a big time program.

Joseph as a capable and efficient assistant who could learn and maybe take over the program one day? definitely.

One thing the 2022 season has taught us is that Joseph is a good guy on the show.

I won’t remember much about this season. There weren’t any memorable games, unless there was one coming on Friday.

I will remember the thoughtful conversations with Casey Thompson, the pride and fight of Garrett Nelson and Travis Vukolek. And the spirit of this superior group that became a better team after losing their coach.

It happened because of Joseph. He came back and was a difference maker. He will have his choice of landing sites. I hope he hangs around.

Tom’s pick: Iowa 21, Nebraska 10.
