Brazilian Neymar crying on the bench after a right ankle injury

LUCILLE, Qatar – Neymar was pictured crying on the Brazil bench after leaving his side’s 2-0 win over Serbia to start their World Cup campaign in Qatar on Thursday, after sustaining an injury to his right ankle.

Team doctors said Brazil, who are chasing a sixth World Cup title, now have to wait between 24 and 48 hours to see if Neymar plays again at this year’s tournament.

Neymar was at the center of an electric charge for Brazil as Tottenham’s Richarlison scored twice – including a stunning second – but Silicao They will now face tough days as they await more news on the fitness of their star player.

The Brazilian forward was fouled nine times throughout the match by a physical Serbian side and was substituted by Anthony in the 80th minute after spending some time on the ground at the iconic Lusail Stadium following a hard tackle from Nikola Milinkovic.

Neymar was treated with ice bags by the team coaches on the bench and was seen limping towards Brazil’s locker room after the win.

In a statement to the media at the end of the match, the Brazilian team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, said that it was still too early to judge the seriousness of Neymar’s injury.

“Neymar has an injury in his right ankle, direct trauma,” Lasmar told Lasmar. “Because of the impact of the Serbian player’s knee, we started treatment on the bench immediately.

“He is following up with the doctor, but now need to wait 24-48 hours for a better evaluation. No MRI planned, but tomorrow we will do a new evaluation. We need to wait and can’t give any early feedback.

“He felt that pain the whole game, but he chose to stay on the field to help his team for 11 minutes after he was injured. It’s great that he did.”

When asked if he had a replacement, Brazil coach Tite said he still believed Neymar would play again in Qatar.

“He stayed for the two goals we scored and even felt an ankle injury because the team needed him,” Tite said after the match. “On the two chances and the chance that he had [was decisive]His ability to overcome pain. In both goals he was already feeling it.

“You can be sure that Neymar will play in the World Cup. I am absolutely sure of that. He will play in the World Cup.”

The 30-year-old looked visibly sad as he walked to the bench and appeared to cry before covering his face with his shirt.

Although there is still no definitive prognosis on the extent of his injury, waiting anxiously for a diagnosis is a reminder of the injury that forced Neymar out of Brazil 2014, when a spinal vertebra after a challenge from Colombia’s Camilo Zuniga ended his opponent in the quarter-final stage.

There is also concern among Neymar’s colleagues about his fitness, as Anthony said: “He is worried, isn’t he? But we don’t know what happened yet. We know how important he is, as a star.”

“The most important thing for us is that he has 100% in the next game,” said Brazil striker Richarlison, who scored both goals on Thursday.

Neymar has yet to win a major title with the national team, though he did help Brazil win the 2013 Confederations Cup and their first Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

With 75 goals for the national team, he is twice shy of Pele’s goalscoring record.
