important role No minor league football team in the nation has more touchdown passes than Wake Forest’s 37.
The Devil Deacons are also No. 11 nationally in passing yards (311 per game).
So, Duke must once again direct his powerful rushing offense to control the ball and keep it away from Wake Forest when the two teams meet in the regular season finale on Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.
For most of the season, the Blue Devils ranked second to Florida State in rushing offense among ACC teams. The Seminoles (217 yards per game) still lead the way, but two consecutive games dropped Duke to third in the league at 191 yards per game.
That’s because Duke produced 165 receiving yards during a win over Virginia Tech, 24-7, on Nov. 12 and a season-low 65 receiving yards while losing 28-26 in Pittsburgh last Saturday.
Injuries to offensive lineman Jacob Monk, starting tight end Nicky Dalmolin and backup linebackers Terry and Jacques Moore (no relation) played a role in the two-game slump. Dalmolin won’t play again until the Duke’s Bow game next month, but Blue Devils coach Mike Elko said Monk, Terry and Jake’s Moore will be back every day and hopefully play against Wake Forest.
Monk has played right center guard at various times this season. Terry and Jacques Moore provided depth behind running backs Jaylen Coleman and Jordan Waters helping keep players active late in the games.
So their return will be important to Duke’s chances of ending a three-game losing streak against Wake Forest.
