Gore released the Shakedry material in 2016 to much fanfare and it’s proven to be a highly desirable choice for cycling and running wear ever since. In fact, Gore-Tex Shakedry apparel comes with a “Guaranteed to Keep You Dry” promise.
The material construction, which eschews the face texture and places the waterproof membrane on the outside instead—means water pours and flows rather than soaking in. As the name suggests, a few quick shakes will completely remove the majority of the water from the outside of the jacket.
In a report from Road.cc, the brand says, “Gore-Tex Shakedry is and will continue to be an essential part of the GoreWear product offering to meet the needs of all-weather endurance athletes. Unfortunately, Gore Fabrics is no longer offering Gore-Tex Shakedry technology due to supply challenges.” We’re excited about our Gore-Tex Shakedry technology, and therefore invested in our inventory position last year to ensure we’d be able to offer it until our current inventory ran out.”
What could this mean for cyclists
Our understanding of the above statement is that once inventory of Shakedry products disappears, they will disappear for good, but GoreWear—the in-house brand of the consumer-facing cycling apparel brand—has stockpiled the fabric to ensure it can continue to serve its customers.
The result is that competing brands’ Shakedry products will almost certainly be phased out. In fact, this has already begun. While researching our latest guide to the best waterproof cycling jackets, we were unable to get samples of some of the competing products.
“We’ve always had fabric supply issues,” explained a representative for 7 mesh makers of the Oro Shakedry jacket. Oro will be discontinued after this next charge.
Meanwhile, Saddleback, Castelli’s UK distributor, explained that “from AW22, you don’t use Castelli Shakedry because the material is no longer available to third parties.” With that said, Castelli is looking forward to already having a similar alternative available; The “Slicker Pro” jacket is made using a material it describes as “an ultra-lightweight, two-layer 50g/m2 waterproof fabric with a PFC-free microporous polyurethane outer membrane.”
If you’re thinking of investing in a Gore-Tex Shakedry Jacket, you might want to secure one before we run out of stock. We suspect such a popular material would be discontinued without at least a plan to replace it. We don’t currently know what that will be, but we’ll keep our ears on the ground for news and updates.
